My name is Laika Nevalainen and I am a historian of homes, everyday practices, food, bachelors and communal living. I am Dr of History and Civilization from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy).

In my PhD research I examined the homes and everyday lives of Finnish bachelors from the 1880s to the 1930s. My master's thesis focused on central kitchen buildings that were built in Finland during the 1920s and 1920s. Examples of my work are listed on the Articles-page.

This blog focuses on the history of home, housing and everyday life in Finland. The timeframe will mainly be on the 19th and 18th centuries since these are the periods I know most about but I will aim to at least promote work that has covered earlier periods.
